Growing Problem of Meth Lab Affecting More Children in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee -- The methamphetamine problem in East Tennessee is well-documented. But the addictive drug is not only destroying the lives of adult users. It also affects innocent children.

Law enforcement officers gathered at Knoxville's Moses Center Thursday for meeting of the Select Committee on Children and Youth. They were there to discuss Tennessee's methamphetamine phenomena and take a hard look at how meth is affecting kids.

"They have no recourse," says Cumberland County Sheriff Butch Burgess. "I mean, they are there and they can't go, especially with the younger kids."

Burgess says meth is becoming a big problem in Tennessee.

The latest bust was at an Anderson County home Wednesday night. It was the 40th meth lab bust this year for that county alone.

Cynthia Lacey, 38 and Charles Lacey, 42, are charged in the bust. Mrs. Lacey was just re-arrested Friday on new drug charges. And like many others, the Laceys have kids.

"They can't take care of themselves, let alone their kids," Burgess says. "So you're putting kids in a very dangerous situation.

"It's kind of a sad sight when 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning you get a three or four year old kid sitting in the lobby of the sheriff's department or one of the officers trying to keep him pacified."

The long term goal of the officers is better laws and the need to look at short term solutions to a growing problem. They'd like to find a place where the children taken into custody "will have adults they can stay with and they can eat, they can take a bath, they can watch television, they can go to steep," Burgess says. "We can take them back to their schools the next morning."

Methamphetamine is not a big city drug. Law enforcement officers say that it's popping more and more in rural communities and affecting more children everyday.

In Cumberland County, Tennessee last year, law enforcement officers pulled 31 kids out of meth labs. So far this year, from January 1 to August 1, they've pulled out 35 kids.
