Tennessee couple arrested with 21 pounds of marijuana at bus stationA suitcase containing about 21 pounds of marijuana is displayed Friday at the narcotics division office at the Alexandria Police Department. A couple traveling from Houston to Arkansas was arrested after a K-9 alerted officers of possible drugs in the suitcase at the Bolton Avenue terminal of Greyhound Bus Lines.
The large black suitcase didn't look especially valuable, but the contents were worth about $21,000. There was a blanket and some clothing inside. Except, wrapped in the blanket was 21 pounds of marijuana, Alexandria police narcotics agents said Friday.
Sgt. Newmon Bobb, supervisor of the division, said it appears the Tennessee couple arrested Friday at Greyhound's Bolton Avenue bus terminal was trafficking drugs. The couple was traveling via Greyhound buses from Houston to Arkansas.
It was the second largest amount of drugs seized in Alexandria this month. Last week, federal agents uncovered 26 grams of crack cocaine with a street value of about $26,000.
Agents served a search warrant at a Harris Street residence after arresting Sean Molette of Alexandria on federal drug charges. Molette's brother, Larry, also was arrested.
In Friday's case, Jimmie U. Smith, 28, and Sonya L. Stover, 24, both of Knoxville, Tennessee, face a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
City narcotics officers and Louisiana State Police narcotics agents conducted the joint operation at the Bolton Avenue terminal, Bobb said. Some of the marijuana was compressed, and some of it was packaged in 5-pound bulks.
The operations are conducted randomly to deter drug trafficking through Alexandria. Bobb said detectives had not received prior information on the couple.
An Alexandria K-9 alerted on the couple's luggage, and the drugs were found inside. The couple was arrested without incident.
Smith and Stover were booked into the Rapides Parish Jail.
