Major Drug Bust in Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force announced it has made three major drug seizures over the past week from vehicles traveling through Memphis on Interstate 40.

The seizures were made by the Task Force’s Interstate Interdiction Unit, which is comprised of offcers from the Memphis, Tennessee Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Special agents arrested Rudy Beltran-Morales, 19, of Chihuahua, Mexico, and Rodolfo Beltran-Morales, 55, of Edwards, Colorado, after 60 kilograms of cocaine was seized from their vehicle that was stopped for a speeding violation on I-40 near the Hollywood exit. The special agent who made the traffic stop became suspicious by a strong odor of fresh paint inside the car. After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, and a narcotics detection dog gave a positive alert for drugs, the agents seized the cocaine from a secret compartment in the trunk. The wholesale value of the cocaine is more than $1 million. Both passengers were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell.

Special agents arrested Luis Padron, 49, of and Maria Elias, 35, both residents of Turlock, California, after a narcotics detection dog positively alerted the agents to drugs inside their vehicle. Special agents had stopped the 1998 Ford Contour for a speeding violation on I-40 near the Watkins exit. After obtaining a consent to search, the agents seized four pounds of Meth “ice,” one pound of powder Methamphetamine, and one pound of marijuana inside a The Meth “ice’ has a wholesale value of more than $60,000; the Methamphetamine is valued at $15,000; the marijuana has a wholesale value of $900. Padron and Elias were both charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell.

Special agents arrested Timoteo Ramos, 31, of Edingburg, Texas, after ten pounds of cocaine was seized from his vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation at I-40 near the McLean exit. After making the traffic stop, an agent noticed tampering around the vehicle’s gas cap area, and received consent to search the vehicle. A narcotics detection dog positively alerted the agent to drugs near the gas cap area. A further search revealed ten one-pound packages of cocaine inside the gas tank. The value of the cocaine seized is $90,000. Timoteo was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell.

“Interstate 40 is an easily accessible means for drug traffickers to move their supplies to or through Memphis, Tennessee. The Interstate Interdiction Unit is key to stopping the pipeline of drugs that is being routed through Memphis, Tennessee and being sold in our community,” said Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons.

The West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force is a joint agency comprised of 43 law enforcement officers assigned from various law enforcement agencies in four of west Tennessee’s judicial districts.
