Tennessee grand jury gets marijuana trialCaterer who mailed himself 200 grams of 'medical' pot waives preliminary hearing
Premier Place Catering owner Carl Jones will have his marijuana possession case heard by a grand jury in March, while charges against his wife, Angel, were dropped Tuesday.
The 45-year-old businessman waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Madison County, Tennessee General Sessions Court. He admitted in a November interview with The Jackson Sun that he suffers from a marijuana addiction. He's charged with felony possession of marijuana with the intent to resell and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Angel Jones was charged with introducing contraband into a criminal facility, according to reports from the Tennessee Sheriff's Department. Jones said he asked his wife to bring his prescription medication to the Madison County, Tennessee Criminal Justice complex after his arrest. However, she did not know one of the prescription bottles contained marijuana, he said.
The Joneses' attorney Joe Byrd said in an earlier interview that he'd hoped the charges against Angel would be dropped.
Carl Jones was released from jail on a $7,500 bond. He said his use of marijuana was medicinal, though that is illegal in Tennessee.
"I don't mind people knowing I have a problem, maybe it'll help other people," he said in the November interview. "I want to pay my price for what I've done and for the truth to come out."
Jones was arrested in November after investigators discovered he had mailed himself a package that contained 200 grams of marijuana from California.
Local law enforcement estimate the street value for the quantity of the drug Jones had mailed would be around $800.
