Tennessee: Brown Cadillac, green in the back

Thieves got more than a stylish ride last week when they drove off from the Medical Center in an elderly Savannah, Tennessee woman's Cadillac.

In the trunk, the victim told police, was more than $200,000 in cash.

The brown, 1991 Cadillac was recovered Jan. 8, the same day it was discovered missing, and a man was arrested with more than $53,000 in a plastic envelope in his pocket.

That led Tennessee police to another man who had $4,100 in cash that he said came from a suitcase friends brought to his house after it was taken from the car, according to a police report.

Tennessee police Capt. William Dawkins said Friday the woman did not know the exact amount taken and that an investigation is ongoing. He declined to release the woman's name for her safety.

"We don't want her to be a victim twice," Dawkins said. "They found this money in her trunk. There still may be money out there. I can't really comment on anything else."

The woman, who is in her mid-70s, reported the car stolen from a parking lot near UT Bowld Hospital where her husband was undergoing treat ment for an illness. It was not clear why she had the money in her trunk, authorities said.

At around 4 a.m. on Jan. 8, police arrested David A. Coleman, 39, on a hotel parking lot at 1188 South Parkway E. where they found the victim's Cadillac with a broken steering column.

Coleman had crack cocaine and $53,663 in his pocket, according to a report. "I found the money on the ground after someone dropped it around the area of Poplar and Manassas," Coleman is quoted as saying in the report.

He was charged with theft over $1,000 and drug possession.

The following day police arrested Jerry Lee Harris Jr., 23, at 481 Jones near Poplar and Manassas, a few blocks from the hospital on Court.

Harris surrendered $4,100 to police and was charged with theft over $1,000.

"(Harris) advised that as he and the others were going through the suitcases they discovered a large sum of money and he reached in and took approx. $5,000," his arrest ticket said.

The ticket said Harris also surrendered a gold-and-diamond ring that he said he bought with the money.

Tennessee police searched an apartment in the 600 block of Alabama where a woman surrendered $1,400 in cash believed stolen from the car, according to another arrest ticket.

The woman was not arrested, but her 15-year-old son and a 13-year-old boy were taken to Juvenile Court and charged with theft over $500, said Chief Probation Officer Barry Mitchell.
